Balanced Scoring Moves Express Past Lackawanna

The Express return home Tuesday (Jan. 17) for a Region 15 contest against Borough of Manhattan Community College

SCRANTON, PA – Monroe Express women's basketball wrapped up a two game Pennsylvania road trip Sunday afternoon defeating the Lackawanna College Falcons, 54-37, inside Lackawanna College Student Union Gymnasium in Scranton, PA. With the victory, the Express' record improves to 11-5, and Lackawanna drops to 6-5.

The Express wanted to end their PA road trip on a high note, and they certainly achieved that with a statement win before returning home. 

Both teams started off cold from the field, before Nya Jackson knocked down a 3-pointer to break the scoring ice. Nyeira Spady hit the first field goal for the Express at the 3:27 mark, following an Alyssa Grant jumper to even the score. Monroe would settle into their offense in the second quarter, but it was not until the third period where they would create a comfortable lead. 

Only leading by one out of the half time break, Sierra Jones would pick off a Lackawanna pass and drill a jumper to increase the advantage by three. From this point, the Express would go on a 20-8 run, that included four Aleah James' jumpers and an Ariella Johnson 3-pointer. 

Leading by 16 going into the fourth quarter, Jones capitalized on another Falcon miscue, which resulted in a jump shot in the opening seconds of the stanza. The Express would achieve their largest lead of the contest at 21, after Maria Negron snatched a rebound off a Dominique Geiger miss which led to an Anastasia Davis hit from downtown. In the closing moments, Ariel Johnson scored her first points of the contest off a Davis pass, which ultimately settled the 54-37 final.
Janay Legagneur lead the Express with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and one block. James followed with 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Spady registered six points, 13 rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal while Negron had six points and eight rebounds. 

Monroe held the advantage in points in the paint (28-10), bench points (18-13), points off turnovers (12-9), field goal percentage (29.2 to 18.2), free throw percentage (60 to 50), assists (13-10), and steals (12-5). Lackawanna lead the game in rebounds (55-45), second chance points (8-2) and blocks (6-2). 

The Express return home Tuesday (Jan. 17) for a Region 15 battle against Borough of Manhattan Community College inside Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, NY at 6 PM.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
