GLOUCESTER TWP, NJ – After three preseason contests, Monroe Express men's soccer took to the field Saturday afternoon in their season opening match against the #3 nationally ranked Camden County Community College Cougars. Behind a valiant effort by the underdog Express, the contest concluded with a 1-4 setback inside Gloucester Township Park in New Jersey.
The Cougars broke the scoring ice scoring their first of four goals at the 20 minute mark, followed by an answer from the Express' Tom Hendrickson, shortly after. Three more points later and Camden County would settle the contest at 1-4.Â
Express goalkeeper Alessio Pirrello registered three saves on the afternoon and relinquished four goals, while Monroe kicked 12 shots on goal, connecting on one for their lone goal.
The Express return to the field Tuesday, September 6 against the Westchester Community College Vikings (0-0) at Barrett Field in Valhalla, NY.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
