Monroe Express Baseball Splits Doubleheader with UConn Avery Point

BRONX, N.Y., April 24, 2022 – The Monroe College Express baseball team split a doubleheader with UConn Avery Point Sunday afternoon at Roberto Clemente State Park. The Express picked up the victory in Game 1 by a score of 4-2, but fell in the day's finale, 15-4. The Express move to 14-18 overall, while the Pointers go to 19-9-1.
 
GAME 1: Monroe 4, UConn Avery Point 2
The Express got an early jump on the Pointers in Game 1 when Ernie Farrell in an RBI double to bring in Josephs Rosario in the bottom of the first to make it a 1-0 game. The game then went quiet until the bottom of the fifth, when Jose Arrieta blasted a three-run homer to give Monroe a 4-0 advantage. The Pointers picked up two runs in the top of the seventh as they tried to get back into the game, but Anderson Cuello shut the door to help the Express hang on for the 4-2 victory.
 
Denis Garcia was great in the start on Sunday, going five innings without allowing a run. He struck out two batters and yielded just three hits to earn his first win of the year. Cuello came on in the seventh and shut down three straight batters to earn his first save. Alex Mach took the loss for UConn Avery Point to fall to 3-1.
 
Arrieta finished 1-for-3 with his three-run homer in the win. Farrell batted 2-for-2 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Rosario went 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Ruben Ogando hit 2-for-3 with a two-bagger, while Alex Rodriguez hit 2-for-3 as well. Malvin Gutierrez went 1-for-3 in the game.
 
GAME 2: UConn Avery Point 15, Monroe 4 (6 INN)
The Express took an early lead in the bottom of the second in Game 2 when Rodriguez hit an RBI single to knock in Farrell and make it a 1-0 Express lead. However, the Pointers took the lead in the top of the third when Tyler Rice hit a grand slam to make it a 4-1 game.
 
In the bottom of the third, the Express responded, first with a solo homer by Rosario to make it a two-run game. Arrieta later hit an RBI single to get Monroe within a run, and then Ogando reached on an error that brought in Farrell to tie the game at 4-4.
 
UConn Avery Point then put eight runs on the board in the fourth and another three runs in the fifth to take a big lead on the Express, forcing the eventual run-rule finish after six frames.
 
Chris Dominguez took the loss for Monroe to fall to 2-5 on the year. Keegan Daigle picked up the win to improve to 5-0.
 
Rosario went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in Game 2. Arrieta hit 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Farrell scored twice in a 1-for-2 game. Rodriguez hit 1-for-1 with an RBI. Gutierrez went 1-for-2 as well.
 
The Express get back to Region 15 action on Tuesday, April 26, when they visit Borough of Manhattan Community College in Bellerose, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
