Monroe Express Women's Basketball Coach Jeremy Thompson Receives Northeast District Coach Of The Year Honors

Bronx, New York - After directing the Monroe Express women's basketball program to their first-ever NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament appearance, Head Coach Jeremy Thompson was honored as the Northeast District Coach of the Year as announced by the NJCAA.

Thompson guided the Express to a single-season record 22 victories during the 2021-22 season, including a perfect 7-0 Region 15 record to secure the top seed in the 2022 Region 15 Women's Basketball Championship, where they knocked off their Bronx rivals Bronx C.C. 58-28 and Hostos C.C. 45-39 in the championship

Monroe-Bronx made their first NJCAA 2022 Division III Women's Basketball Championship Tournament appearance this season, getting edged by 12th seed North Country 58-53 in the first round but rallying to defeat #2 nationally-ranked Northland Community and Technical College 61-46 in the consolation game.

Thompson mentioned in the preseason that the Express had unfinished business going into the 2021-22 season, and his squad clearly showed it coming out of the gate starting a program-best 9-0 on the season. Two of their first nine wins came against ranked opponents #10 Hostos C.C. and #12 Community College of Rhode Island. Three also came against teams ranked in the NJCAA Division III Women's Preseason Top 15 Poll in Middlesex County College (Preseason #12), UCONN Avery Point (Preseason #8), and Hostos (Preseason #6). In addition, the Express swept Hostos C.C. for the first time in program history.

The Express finished third in the country with 16.9 steals per game and sixth in points per game at 52.5. The Express finished third in the country with 16.9 steals per game and sixth in points per game at 52.5 and rose to as high as #4 in the country and finished in the top 10 at #6 in the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball polls.

This season, he tutored a program-record five Region 15 All-Region XV Team Selections led by freshman Nyeira Spady (New Rochelle, New York) the program's first-ever Region 15 Player Of The YearSpady was dynamite in her first season in an Express uniform, leading the Express in scoring with 376 points (12.5 PPG), the second-most in a single season, and 269 rebounds (9 RPG) the third most. She also turned away a team-high tied 36 blocks while receiving the women's basketball program's first-ever NJCAA Player of the Week honor on February 9, 2022. 


ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
