RYE, N.Y., September 18, 2021 - The Monroe Express men's soccer team continued their early-season dominance shutting out another visiting Regional opponent Suffolk County Community College, 4-0, in a rematch of last season's Region 15 title game on Saturday morning at Gryphon Field on the campus of The School of the Holy Child. The Express begin their season 3-0 for the first time in school history and move their Region 15 record to 2-0. Suffolk fell to 2-1 overall and in the Region.
After both teams felt each other out for the first 10 minutes, sophomore
James Gerbier (Rosedale, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Express in the 12th minute heading home a beautifully bent corner kick from
Andres Lora (Buenos Aires, Argentina) into the bottom left pocket of the net to make it 1-0. Seven minutes later, Monroe-Bronx was awarded a corner kick, and sophomore
Sabitu Issah (Accra, Ghana) sent the ball into the box and off a Suffolk player's head for an own goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Express's third goal came in the 58th minute when freshman
Roger Parkin picked up the first goal of his career to make it 3-0.
Lora bent a free-kick just short of the six-yard box and deflected out to
Parkin, who fired it off of a Suffolk defender and over the goaltender's head.
Express sophomore goalkeeper
Jose Hernandez (Guatemala) was tested in the match and stepped up when Monroe-Express needed it. He finished the day with two saves to earn his first clean sheet and first victory of the season. Freshman Anthony Molina split time in the net for the Sharks with Alex Once and was strong off the bench making three saves in 67 minutes. Once played the first 22 minutes of the match for Suffolk.
The Express will look to remain perfect on the campaign this Tuesday, September 21, at 1 p.m against NJCAA DI District Champion Harcum College.
