Monroe Express Men’s Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Season; Harcum College blanks Monroe-Bronx, 2-0, On The Road On Tuesday

Conshohocken, PA, September 21, 2021 - Harcum College took advantage of a 24th Minute penalty kick and then clamped down defensively to shut down the explosive Monroe Express men's soccer team offense as the Bears defeated Monroe-Bronx, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon at the Proving Grounds. The Bear's fourth consecutive shutout keeps them a perfect 5-0 on the season, while the Express' first loss of the year drops them to 3-1.

Despite outshooting Harcum 7-6 in the first half, the Bears opened the scoring in the 24th minute on a penalty kick goal by freshman Oscar Tenorio. Juan Escobar took advantage of a defensive mixup by weaving through two Express defenders and getting taken down from behind to draw the Penalty Kick opportunity that gave Harcum the lead 1-0. Monroe-Bronx's best chance of the afternoon came in the 32nd minute when freshman Ulises Gomez's (Cali, Colombia) blast from just inside the goal box was turned away by freshman keeper Michel Weber. Both teams played conservatively for the remainder of the first half, with Harcum taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Bears dictated the pace in the second half with an 11-3 advantage in shots, as Tenorio and freshman Santiago Linares had two opportunities turned away in the 59th and 65th minute by Jose Hernandez (Guatemala). After freshman Ned Lewis hit the crossbar in the 71st minute, Tenorio took advantage of a defensive miscommunication and weaving a through ball to Pedro Menezes to double the host's lead in the 74th minute en route to a 2-0 victory.

Hernandez finished the afternoon with a season-high five stops, while Michel Weber had three to earn the blank sheet.

The Express will look to get back to their winning ways tomorrow afternoon on the road, Wednesday, September 22, against Region 15 opponent Bronx Community College at 4 p.m. For more information on the matchup, click the Monroe Express Men's Soccer Schedule
