Monroe Express Softball Drops Two on Opening Day at Suffolk

SELDEN, N.Y., April 3, 2021 – In its first games in nearly two years, the Monroe Express softball team dropped both matchups in a season-opening doubleheader at Suffolk County Community College Saturday afternoon. The Express start the year 0-2, while the Sharks improve to 7-2 overall.

Game 1: Suffolk 14, Monroe 1 (5 INN)
It was tough sledding for the Express in Game 1 as they looked to shake off the rust from two years without a game. The Sharks scored the first 10 runs of the day in the first three innings. The Express got on the board in the top of the fourth when Yashira Centeno brought in Paola Calderon on a ground out to second. The Sharks added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to eventually force a run-rule finish.

Zahra Medina shouldered the loss for the Express in Game 1 to fall to 0-1 on the young season. Gina Postiglione picked up the win for the Sharks to improve to 4-1.

Medina hit 1-for-3 in the game, while Brianna Sydney finished 1-for-2.

Game 2: Suffolk 17, Monroe 0 (5 INN)
The Sharks got off to a big start in Game 2 and never looked back, tallying eight runs in the bottom of the first. They added another four in the second, and two more runs in the third, before capping things off with a four-run fourth frame.

Mia Colmarino got the start for the Express in Game 2, but shouldered her first loss to drop to 0-1. Samantha Butler picked up the win for Suffolk to improve to 3-1.

Calderon picked up Monroe's lone hit of the contest, a double in the top of the fifth, to finish 1-for-1 in the game, including a walk as well.

The Express will look to bounce back in more familiar territory when they take on New Rochelle counterpart, the Monroe Mustangs, on Tuesday, April 6, at Flowers Park in New Rochelle. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 4 p.m.
