Monroe Express Baseball Falls in Tight Pitcher’s Duel at Orange; Game 2 Canceled Due to Rain

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, N.Y., April 11, 2021 – In what was supposed to be a doubleheader at Orange County Community College on Sunday, the Monroe College Express baseball team dropped a Game 1 pitcher's duel, 2-1, to the Colts, before Game 2 was canceled due to inclement weather. The loss drops the Express to 3-7 on the year, while the Colts improve to 3-2.

All three runs in Sunday's contest were scored in the third and fourth inning. The Colts got the first run of the day in the bottom of the third. Kylan White was hit by a pitch, then proceeded to steal second and third. Ian Engentio then brought him in on a sacrifice fly to left, giving the home team a one-run lead.

It took one swing for the Express to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Demetrio Rodriguez hit a one-out solo homer to center, knotting things up at 1-1.

Some small-ball got the Colts back in the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Casey Dailey drew a walk, and then Chris Rahm beat out a bunt to third to put runners on the corners. A balk then brought in pinch runner Michael Cron from third to give the Colts a 2-1 lead.

Moises Figueroa turned in a strong five-inning effort on Sunday, allowing just two runs on three hits with four strikeouts, but unfortunately shoulders the loss. Kenny Sanchez came on in relief and pitched a scoreless sixth inning. James McGovern got the complete-game victory for Orange.

Rodriguez finished 1-for-3 with his solo homer in the game. Jose Arrieta also hit 1-for-3, while Joseph Rosario collected Monroe's other hit to go 1-for-2.

The Express get a week to rest before heading up to Stone Ridge, N.Y., to take on Ulster County Community College in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17. Game 1 is set to begin at 12 p.m.
