Monroe Express Edges Monroe College 63-60 In Home Opener

New Rochelle, N.Y. (November 21, 2021) – Off of a solid road victory, the Monroe Express JV men's basketball team outlasted Monroe College, 63-60 on Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Express improved to 2-0 with the victory, while the Mustangs fell to 1-3. 

Leshawn Bryant (Brooklyn , NY) headed the Express offense with a game-high tying 15 points, while Audley Falconer (Bronx, NY) scored 14 points in the matchup. Chamarri Baskerville (Queens, New York) brought down a team-high nine rebounds and scored 12 points, while Ismael Garcia (Ponce, Puerto Rico) snatched two steals.

Monroe College jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage at 16:28 of the first half before the Express got it within two, 7-5 on a Bakersfield three-pointer at 16:03. After the Mustangs extended the lead to 10-5 at 15:08, Monroe-Bronx JV would go on a 7-1 run to take their first lead 12-11 on a Bakersfield layup at 11:32. After two Bryant free throws to 16-12 at 9:30, the Mustangs scored the following five points to retake the lead 17-16 at 7:31 on two free throws by Richie Guillaume. After two lead changes and two ties, Monroe College went into halftime with a 30-29 lead.

The Express started the second half strong, scoring five of eight points to retake the lead by one, 34-33 at 18:41 on a Jordan Wilson three-pointer. After building their lead to the largest of the afternoon 50-42 on a Falconer three-pointer at 9:34, the Mustangs outscored them 17-9 over the next seven and a half minutes to tie it at 59 on a Jahel Ramsey layup. Falconer made a three-pointer on the next possession to give the Express back the lead 62-59. Then Darius Rivers (Bronx, NY) extended the lead to 63-60 after trading free throws with the Mustangs. Jahel Ramsey had a chance to force overtime but missed a tying three with five seconds left to allow the Express to hold on for the victory. 

For Monroe College, Richie Guillaume led the way with a double-double with a game-high tied 15 points and game-best 14 rebounds. Jahel Ramsey drained 15 points which were a game-best tied, and Jeremiah Cherry had 10 points and joined Thomas Passewe and Guillaume.

The Express men's JV basketball team will take their undefeated record into the break and come back to face OSL Prep in the second game of a four-game homestand on Monday, November 29 at 6 p.m. from the Monroe Athletic Complex.
