Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Uses Late Rally to Upend Bunker Hill on the Road, 54-49

Boston, Mass., January 11, 2020 – The Monroe Express women's basketball program added another tally in the win column on Saturday, using a late rally to upend Bunker Hill Community College on the road, 54-49.
 
The Express improve to 11-6 overall on the season with the victory.
 
Freshman Quanisha Griffin turned in another all-around performance posting 16 points, six rebounds, a season-high eight assists, and eight steals. Freshman guard Barbara Valentin finish with 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Freshman Ramatoulaye Diallo poured in a new season-high of 10 points, along with three rebounds.
 
Freshman Desteny Arzu tallied a new career-high 13 rebounds, six points, and three steals in the win. Freshman Imoni Beauvais had four points, six rebounds, and three steals while Anya Shepherd netted four points in her first career start.
 
The Express fell behind early to start the contest, trailing Bunker Hill 8-4 under four minutes into the contest. Monroe answered back with five straight points to take a one-point lead (9-8) with 4:47 left in the period. The Express closed out the frame leading Bunker, 11-10.
           
In the second quarter, Bunker Hill outscored Monroe 18-9 to take an eight-point lead (28-20) over the Express heading into halftime.
 
After Bunker Hill pushed their lead out to 12 points in the early minutes of the third quarter. The Express responded back, scoring nine unanswered points to cut their deficit to three points (32-29).
 
Down by five points to start out the fourth quarter, a three-pointer from Ramatoulaye Diallo helped the Express spark a 10-5 run to knot the contest at 41-41 with 5:31 remaining in regulations. Back-to-back shots from beyond the arc from Griffin and Valentin and a pair of baskets inside the paint by Arzu gave the Express an eight-point lead (51-43) over the Bulldogs with 2:15 left to play. Monroe held off Bunker Hill in the final stretch of the game to pull out a 54-49 win.
 
Up next, Monroe Express women's basketball program returns home for a non-conference contest against Gateway Community College on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 6:00 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
