Monroe Express Baseball Picks up 11-0, Run-Rule Victory over Vaughn College

BRONX, N.Y., April 10, 2019 – The Monroe Express baseball team defeated the Vaughn College Warriors, 11-0, in a run-rule shortened five innings on Wednesday at Roberto Clemente State Park.
 
A.J. Torres worked around a one-out walk in the top of the first inning, and the Express struck first in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Emanuel Veras reached on an error and stole second. Bianyor Germosen smacked a double to center, scoring Veras and giving Monroe a 1-0 lead.
 
The Express extended their lead in the bottom of the second. Anthony Gonzalez Jr. drew a one-out walk, and Torres reached on an error to put two runners on. A wild pitch brought Gonzalez Jr. and Torres into scoring position, before Brayan Lara reached on an error, plating Gonzalez Jr. to make it a 2-0 lead.
 
After Lara stole second and Harold Valdez struck out, Julian Ovalles-Garcia walked to load the bases. Veras singled to left, scoring two to extend the Express' lead to 4-0. And after Germosen drew another walk to load the bases, Gorge Garcia blasted an inside-the-park, grand slam home run to right field, clearing the bases and giving Monroe an 8-0 lead.
 
Torres worked around another Warriors' base runner in the top of the third, before the Express added to their lead again in the bottom of the inning. Torres led off the bottom of the third with a walk, moved to second on a balk and took third on a wild pitch. Lara brought Torres home and reached on an error, before coming home on Valdez' single, extending the lead to 10-0.
 
With two outs, Valdez stole third and scored on the errant throw by the catcher, giving the Express an 11-0 lead.
 
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth, as Yony De Leon pitched a scoreless frame, before Bryan Diaz retired the Warriors in the top of the fifth to finish off the run-rule victory.
 
Torres (1-0) earned the win for the Express, allowing one hit while walking two and striking out four over 3.0 innings pitched. Gomez (0-1) took the loss for Vaughn College.
 
With the win, the Express move to 3-16 on the year, surpassing their 2018 win total, while the Warriors fall to 0-4.
 
Garcia led the Express at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a home run, run scored and four RBI, while Veras went 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Germosen also added an extra-base hit, going 1-for-2 with a double, walk, run scored and RBI.
 
On the mound, both De Leon and Diaz pitched scoreless frames, each recording one strikeout.
 
The Express will next take on Bronx Community College as they continue Region XV play on Friday, April 12 at 4 p.m. at Roberto Clemente State Park.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has nine varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
