Monroe Express Baseball Falls Short against Bronx Community College

BRONX, N.Y., April 12, 2019 – The Monroe Express baseball team fell to the Bronx Community College Broncos, 10-7, on Friday in a Region XV matchup at Roberto Clemente State Park.

Bronx struck first in the top of the third. Steven Santana led off with a solo shot to left, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead. Justin Nunez followed with a single, stole second and scored on Hector Camacho's RBI double, extending Bronx's lead to 2-0. After Camacho advanced to third on a wild pitch, Adrian Urena reached on an error, allowing Camacho to score.

The Express came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Juan Jorge and Devon Marrero hit back-to-back singles, and Albert De Los Santos was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jesus Tejada smacked a two-run single, to cut the Broncos' lead to 3-2, and A.J. Torres groundout out to second, scoring De Los Santos to square the game at 3-3.

And after Edward Mata stranded a runner at third base in the top of the fourth, Emanuel Veras gave Monroe its first lead with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth.

However, the lead would be short-lived, as Bronx scored a pair in the top of the fifth. A pair of errors allowed Camacho to score from second to tie the game at four. And after the Broncos loaded the bases, Quincy Williams drew a bases-loaded walk to give Bronx a 5-4 lead.

The Broncos added to their lead in the top of the seventh. Neudy Salvador drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Williams' RBI double, extending the lead to 6-4.

But this time the Express answered, tying the game in the bottom of the seventh. Marrero led off with a double, taking third as De Los Santos reached on an error. Tejada knocked in another run with an RBI single, cutting the Broncos' lead to 6-5, before Torres loaded the bases with another single.

Miguel Reicino reached on a fielder's choice, before the Broncos misplayed a potential double-play, allowing Tejada to score to knot the game at 6-6.

But the Broncos put up four runs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead. Christian Cedeno led off with a single and stole second. Camacho gave the Broncos the lead with an RBI double, before Urena made it 9-6 with a two-run homer to left. A batter later, Michael Mateo another home run, this time a solo shot, to make it a 10-6 lead for the Broncos.

Monroe threatened in the top of the ninth, scoring a run on Tejada's RBI double, but Esteban De Los Santos got a ground out and a fly out to end the threat, and give Bronx the 10-7 victory.

Rafael Duran Perez (0-2) took the loss for the Express, while De Los Santos (3-0) earned the win for the Broncos. With the loss, the Express fall to 3-17 (1-8 Region XV), while the Broncos move to 10-5 (10-2 Region XV).

Mata got the start for the Express and took a no-decision, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out four over 5.0 innings pitched.

Tejada led the Express at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, run scored and four RBI. Marrero added three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, while Veras hit his second home run of the year, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.
