NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 26, 2019 – Monroe Express women's basketball defeated the Queensborough Community College Tigers, 62-44, in the Region XV Quarterfinals, their first-ever playoff game, on Tuesday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
After an ice-cold start from the floor, the Express trailed Queensborough, 11-7 at the end of the first quarter, shooting just 16.7 percent from the floor.
But with a 6-2 run to start the second quarter, the Express knotted things up at 13-all on
Jacqueline Jimenez' three-point play. And after the Tigers retook the lead on Giselle Diaz' jumper, Monroe closed the half on a 7-0 run, holding Queensborough scoreless over the final 5:40, to take a 20-15 lead into the halftime break.
The Express extended their lead to double-digits with another 7-0 run to open the third quarter, and outscored the Tigers, 17-6 over the first five minutes to the quarter to take a 37-21 lead.
Monroe took its largest lead of the game, 46-22, following a 9-1 run with 2:22 to play in the third, but Queensborough ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit 18 heading to the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, the Express and Tigers went back-and-forth, but Monroe's lead never slipped below 15 points as both teams scored 16 points in the quarter, en route to the Express' 62-44 victory.
With the win, the Express move to 12-18 on the season, while Queensborough falls to 8-13.
Maryam Camara led the way for the Express with 16 points, 10 rebounds and nine steals, falling a steal shy of the second triple-double in program history.
Julie Trowers added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Ariana Johnson knocked down her first five buckets en route to a 10-point performance.
After shooting just 24.2 percent in the first half, the Express shot 45.2 percent in the third and fourth quarters. Monroe also scored 35 points off 38 Queensborough turnovers, as well as 42 points in the paint.
With the win, the Express advance to the Region XV Semifinals on Saturday, March 2 where they'll take on the No. 1-seed, Hostos Community College, at 2:15 p.m. at BMCC Gymnasium in New York, N.Y.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 29 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has nine varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
