Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Falls to Hostos in Region XV Semifinals

NEW YORK, N.Y., March 2, 2019 – The Monroe Express women's basketball team fell to the No. 1-seeded Hostos Community College Caimans, 88-39, in the NJCAA Division III Region XV Semifinals on Saturday at BMCC Gymnasium.

After Jacqueline Jimenez' layup got the Express on the scoreboard first, Hostos raced out to a 12-2 lead behind a 12-0 run over the next 3:04. Jimenez and Julie Trowers would slow the run with a pair of free throws, but the Caimans ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 24-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Monroe struggled to find their range early on as the Caimans built their lead to 27 with a 9-0 run to start the second half. Hostos outscored the Express, 27-10, in the second quarter to take a 51-16 lead into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the Caimans pulled away, extending their lead out to 75-22, outscoring the Express by 18 in the quarter while shooting 44.4 percent from the field.

And while Monroe found their range in the fourth quarter, shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from three, the deficit proved to be too much and the Caimans advanced to the Region XV Championship on Sunday with an 88-39 win.

Jiemenez led the Express with 10 points, while both Maryam Camara and Trowers tallied a team-high nine rebounds.

With the loss, the Express finish the season 12-19, a five-win improvement upon their 2017-18 season.
