Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Tops Kingsborough, 71-49, on Sophomore Day

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 23, 2019 – The Monroe Express women's basketball team wrapped up the 2018-19 season with a 71-49 win over the Kingsborough Community College Wave on Sophomore Day at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Saturday.
 
Though the Express jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, Kingsborough clawed their way back to cut the deficit to just four, 14-10, at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Wave opened the second quarter with an 8-3 run to take their first lead of the game, 18-17 with 6:23 to go in the second quarter. But the Express locked down on defense and responded with a 15-3 run of their own to retake the lead, 32-21 with just over two minutes till halftime.
 
Monroe headed into halftime up by 13, 37-24, and shooting 40 percent from the floor. Maryam Camara led the Express at the half with a double-double, her seventh of the season, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds in the first half.
 
With a 12-3 run, Monroe pulled away from the Wave to start the third quarter, extending their lead out to 22, 49-27 midway through the quarter. The Express held Kingsborough to just 18.8 percent shooting in the third as they double-up the Wave, outscoring Kingsborough, 20-10 in the quarter to take a 57-34 lead into the fourth.
 
And though the Wave outscored the Express, 15-14, in the fourth quarter, the Express' lead was too much for Kingsborough to overcome and Monroe finished off the regular season with a 71-49 victory.
 
With the win, the Express finish the regular season 11-18 (9-6 Region XV), while the Wave fall to 3-17 (3-12 Region XV).
 
Julie Trowers led the Express with 21 points and 16 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the year, while Maryam Camara also recorded a double-double, her seventh, with 14 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Express outscored Kingsborough, 48-10, in points in the paint, while out-rebounding the Wave, 67-36.
 
The Express are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 26 when they host the No. 5 Queensborough Community College Tigers in the Region XV Quarterfinals at 7 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 29 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has nine varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
