New Rochelle, N.Y., November 5, 2019 – The Monroe College Express men's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season on Tuesday night, defeating ASA College JV 83-68 on their home court at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Express were led by four players in double-figures.
Freshman
Isiah Ryan had an impressive debut for the Express ending the evening with a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebound to go with five assists and two steals. Bronx native
Derek Smith notched 19 points, six boards, six assists and two steals in 37 minutes of play. Sophomore
Kevin Austion and freshman
Kevon Wiggins were the Express' last two performers in double-figures, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively.
Kamani Mcintosh, Quan Van Putten, and Travonne Davis led the Avengers in double-digit scoring. McIntosh totaled 18 points and seven rebounds, Van Putten registered 16 points and eight boards while Travonne Davis finished with 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Express outshot their opponent 45.6%-31.3% and held a 46-35 advantage on the boards. The Express forced 16 turnovers in the contest, leading to 29 points in transition.
The Express are back in action on Thursday night in an intra-campus matchup against the Monroe College Mustangs. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
