New Rochelle, N.Y., November 14, 2019 – Behind a high offensive performance, the Monroe College Express women's basketball team stormed past Queensborough Community College on Thursday, defeating the Tigers 78-19. The team now improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Region XV play
The Express shot 60 percent from the field in the opening quarter, outscoring the Tiger 32-4. Monroe's defense had a strong presence, forcing 18 turnovers and held Queensborough to one-for-six shooting for the floor.
In the second period, a 16-7 run to start out the quarter gave the Express a 46-13 advantage with 2:17 left in the frame. The Express close out the first half with a 40-point lead (43-13).
In the third quarter, Monroe held Queensborough scoreless, outscoring the Tigers 16-0. The Express control the game throughout the final 10 minutes, garnering their largest lead of 63 points (78-15) to secure the victory.
Sophomore
Julie Trowers finished with a game-high 13 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore
Monae Laing added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Freshman
Quanisha Griffin contributed 10 points on a 4-for-5 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc while tallying four steals, two rebounds, and two assists.
Freshman
Barbara Valentin totaled eight points, four steals, three rebounds, and two assists. Freshman
Mariame Gueye had a season-high eight points and three rebounds.
Ashley Molina posted nine points and seven boards while
Imoni Beauvais notched seven points, seven rebounds, and seven steals in the win.
The Express shot 45.9 percent from the field for the game while holding the Tigers to just 20 percent. Monroe outrebounded the Tigers 45-27 and scored 54 points in the paint.
Up next, the Monroe Express women's basketball team hosts No. 1 nationally ranked Hostos Community College on Tuesday, Nov 19 at 5 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
