Monroe Express Men’s Basketball’s Upset Bid Falls Just Short at No. 1 Suffolk County

SELDEN, N.Y., January 26, 2019 – Just four days after upsetting the No 4-ranked Borough of Manhattan Panthers, Monroe Express men's basketball led No. 1 Suffolk County Community College at the half, but fell just short in their upset of bid of the Sharks, falling by the final score of 84-76.
 
The Express led by five, 33-28, at the half, as they looked to upset their second Top-10 opponent of the week.
 
However, the Sharks responded, outscoring the Express, 56-43, in the second half to remain unbeaten and pick up the 84-76 victory.
 
With the loss, the Express drop to 10-10 (6-8 Region XV) on the season, while the Sharks remain undefeated at 17-0 (10-0 Region XV).
 
Loquan Deloatch and Christopher Davis each led the Express with 21 points, while Luis Aviles added 14 points, scoring in double-figures for the second consecutive game.
 
Davis also led the Express on the glass with seven rebounds, while Deloatch, Gian Batista and Khalik Johnson each recorded a team-high four assists.
 
The Express are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 31 when they wrap up the month of January with a non-conference matchup against Westchester Community College at 8 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
