NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 31, 2019 – Though they led at the half, Monroe Express men's basketball fell to the Westchester Community College Vikings, 85-77, on Thursday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
The Express opened an early 11-4 lead against the Vikings, leading by as many as nine points as their full-court press forced 14 first-half turnovers. However, Westchester clawed their way back, tying the game at 25 with eight minutes to go in the first half.
Four minutes later, the Express led once again, this time by one, before proceeding to double-up the Vikings over the final few minutes to take a 44-40 lead into the half.
Westchester quickly tied the game and took the lead, opening the second half on a 9-2 run. Monroe regained the lead, and led 54-52 with 13:32 to remaining, but it would prove to be their last lead of the game.
The Vikings outscored the Express by 10 points the rest of the way, building a double-digit lead in the waning moments before
Moussa Sanogo closed the final deficit to eight, 85-77, with two late scores.
Westchester moves to 13-7 with the win, while the Express fall to 10-11.
Christopher Davis led the Express with his fifth double-double of the season, tallying 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Loquan Deloatch added 17 points, while
Gian Batista scored 14 and
Tyhj Peterson totaled 10.
The Express are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 2 when host the Prestige Preparatory Academy at 3 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
