NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 24, 2019 – The Monroe Express women's basketball team trailed the No. 2 Hostos Community College Caimans by just five at the half, but fell, 69-49, on Thursday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
After back-to-back layups from
Julie Trowers knotted the score at 6-6 midway through the first quarter, the Caimans closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 13-6 lead.
Hostos extended their lead out to double-digits midway through the second quarter, but the Express fought back, outscoring the Caimans by four over the final four minutes of the quarter to cut the deficit to just five, 26-21, heading into the locker room.
Tatyana Forde hit three first-half three-pointers for the Express to lead all scorers heading into the locker room with nine points.
However, the Caimans outscored the Express by 13, 18-5, in the third quarter to pull away, and 25-23 in the fourth to finish off the 69-49 victory.
With the loss, the Express fall to 8-13 (7-4 Region XV) on the season, while Hostos remains unbeaten in region play at 16-4 (10-0 Region XV).
Trowers led the Express with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Forde added 10 points and seven boards.
Maryam Camara led the Express on the glass with 10 rebounds, while Forde and
Destinee White each recorded a team-high three assists.
The Express next take on the Nassau Community College Lions on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
