NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 10, 2019 – The Monroe Express women's basketball team fell to the Monroe College Mustangs, 82-46, in the second intra-campus matchup in program history.
Jacqueline Jimenez got the Express on the scoreboard with 7:30 remaining in the first quarter, knotting the score at 2-2. However, the Mustangs used an 8-0 run to take an early lead, and the Express trailed 19-8 at the end of the first quarter.
And though the Express held the Mustangs to just 36.0 percent shooting in the second quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Express by 11 in the quarter to pull ahead by 22, 41-19, at the half.
In the third,
Julie Trowers caught fire, tallying seven points and six rebounds to record her sixth double-double of the season. But the Mustangs pulled away, taking a 63-32 lead at the end of the third quarter before picking up an 82-46 victory.
With the loss, the Express drop to 6-10 on the season, while the Mustangs move to 13-4.
Trowers led the Express with 20 points and 14 rebounds, while
Destinee White added 11 points and six boards.
The Express next head to Troy, N.Y. to take on the 10th-ranked Hudson Valley Community College Vikings at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
