NEW YORK, N.Y., September 7, 2018 – Behind
Ryan Smart's second-half goal, Monroe Express men's soccer defeated fifth-ranked Borough of Manhattan Community College, 1-0, on Friday at Pier 40 at Hudson River Park.
Though Monroe outshot the Panthers, 10-1, in the first half, the Express weren't able to find the back of the net and headed into halftime scoreless.
But just two minutes into the second half, the Express broke through off the leg of
Ryan Smart, taking a 1-0 lead. That would be all the Express needed, as
Mustapha Ceesay and the Mustangs' defense held BMCC to just two shots, and one on goal.
Mamadou Diombera led the Express with eight shots, two on goal, while
Ryan Smart scored his first goal of the season on just three shots. In total, the Express outshot fifth-ranked BMCC, 19-2.
With the win, the Express move to 1-1 (1-1 Region XV) on the season, while the Panthers fall to 1-1.
The Express next travel to Middletown, N.Y. to take on Orange County Community College on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m.
