NEW YORK, N.Y., September 12, 2018 – Monroe Express men's soccer fell on the road to Essex County College at Riverfront Stadium, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon, dropping to 1-2 (1-1 Region XV) on the season.
Essex's Walter Hernandez got the scoring started in the 13th minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from Noelson Charles. But
Rockeem Russell scored on a penalty kick just three minutes later, to knot the game up at one.
But after the Wolverines retook the lead on Charles' 33rd minute goal, the Express picked up two red cards, and were forced to play the rest of the match down two men.
The Wolverines took advantage, tallying another score before the end of the first half and three more in the second half, to pick up a 6-1 victory over the Express.
Russell led the way for the Express with his lone goal, while
Elhadj Diallo added two shots, one of which was on goal.
Mustapha Ceesay made eight saves in goal for the Express, but Essex County outshot Monroe, 32-6, for the game.
The Express will look to get back on track when they head to Middletown, N.Y. to take on Orange County Community College on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
