VALHALLA, N.Y., September 4, 2018 – Monroe College Express men's soccer fell in their season opener at Westchester Community College, 2-1, on Tuesday at Barrett Field.
Chris Vallejo gave the Vikings an early lead of Express goalkeeper's
Mustapha Ceesay early turnover, finding the back of the net just 5:11 into the match.
Just 12 minutes later though,
Mamadou Diombera scored off a rebound to knot the game back up at one. But a penalty on Adboul Sangare gave the Vikings a golden opportunity, and Luis Galeano converted the penalty kick to give Westchester a 2-1 that it'd never relinquish.
The Express outshot the Vikings, 16-11, including a 9-2 advantage in the second half, but Westchester's Guilherme Griza made 10 saves, preventing Monroe from finding the equalizer.
Diombera led the Express with four shots, all of which were on goal. Sangare and
Amadu Jalloh each added a pair of shots, while
Stephane Mendy and
Fred Guillou also each had a shot.
The Express are back in action on Friday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Pier 40 in New York, N.Y. to take on 10th-ranked Borough of Manhattan Community College at 12:00 p.m.
