Monroe Express Baseball Swept by Suffolk County in Sunday Doubleheader

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., April 8, 2018Jean Carlos Polanco picked up his first hit in first at-bat of the season, but the Monroe Express baseball team was swept by Suffolk County Community College in their doubleheader on Sunday at PAL Stadium, dropping game one 18-0 in five innings, and game two, 15-0, in five innings, to fall to 0-13 on the year.
 
Game One: Suffolk 17, Monroe 0 (5)
After the Express went in order in the top of the first, Suffolk County got on the board in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
 
And though the Express got their first baserunner in the top of the second, they were unable to bring him home, and the Sharks extended their lead to 18-0 with seven runs in the second and eight in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Polanco broke up Suffolk County starter Tyler Schmidt's no-hitter in the top of the fifth with his first hit, a double, of the season, but the Express weren't able to bring him around and fell, 18-0, in a run-rule shortened five innings.  
 
Andy Rodriguez (0-4) takes the loss for Monroe, while Schmidt (3-0) earned the win for Suffolk County.
 
Game Two: Suffolk 15, Monroe 0 (5)
Suffolk County again to the lead in game two in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three unearned runs off Gilberto Rosario to take a 3-0 lead.
 
Gorge Garcia singled through the left side to lead off the top of the second, but the Express left him stranded at third base before the Sharks extended their lead with four runs in the bottom of the second.
 
Suffolk County scored three more in the bottom of the third and five in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 15-0, and pick up another five inning, run-rule victory.
 
Rosario (0-4) took the loss for the Express, while Jared Prevete (1-0) earned the win for the Sharks.
 
The Express are back in action on Tuesday, April 10 when they take on Nassau Community College at 4 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
