BELLEROSE, N.Y., April 21, 2018 – Monroe Express Baseball was swept in their doubleheader against Queensborough Community College on Saturday at Padavan Preller Field, as the Express dropped game one, 10-0, and game two, 21-1, to fall to 0-22 (0-19) on the season.
Game One: Queensborough 10, Monroe 0 (5 innings)
The Tigers quickly got on the board against
Hafel Payano and the Monroe Express, tallying 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 10-0 lead.
Emanuel Veras picked up the Express' lone hit of the game in the top of the fourth, but Monroe was unable to bring him home, and fell, 10-0, in a run-rule shortened five innings.
Payano (0-3) took the loss for the Express, while Ryan Sandberg (4-0) picked up the win for Queensborough.
Game Two: Queensborough 21, Monroe 1 (5 innings)
Down 3-0 after the first, the Express got on the board in the top of the second inning.
Gorge Garcia walked to lead off the frame, before
Raymond Pichardo knocked Garcia home with an RBI double, cutting the deficit to two.
However, the Tigers came right back to score 12 runs in the bottom of the second, and six more in the top of the third to take a 21-2 lead, eventually pulling away with a run-rule shortened victory.
Andy Hernandez (0-1) took the loss for Monroe, while John Fitzgerald (1-0) picked up the win for Queensborough.
The Express will look to get back on track on Monday, April 23 when they take on Kingsborough Community College at 4 p.m. in Brooklyn, N.Y., wrapping up their season series against the Wave.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
