NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 20, 2018 – The Monroe Express baseball team fell to Suffolk County Community College, 10-0, in a run-rule shortened five innings on Tuesday at Dick Caswell Field, dropping to 0-4 on the season.
Suffolk County came out hot, and tallied four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. The Sharks led off the game with five straight singles, before a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly made it 4-0.
After the Express went in order in the bottom of the first, the run-scoring continued for the Sharks, as Suffolk County added one in the second and four in the top of the third to take a 10-0 lead.
Hafel Payano shut the Sharks down over two innings of relief, but the Express just couldn't get going at the plate, and fell, 10-0, in five innings.
The Express are back in action on Friday, March 23 when they again take on Suffolk County Community College at 4 p.m. at Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
