NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 17, 2018 – Powered by an extended 40-14 run, Monroe Express men's basketball came from behind to defeat Rockland Community College, 68-55, snapping a two-game losing streak and moving to 11-14 on the season.
Though the Express trailed by as many as 12 midway through the first half, Monroe ended the first half on a 24-8 run to take a four-point lead into halftime.
Louis Florimon led Monroe with 13 points at the break, while the Express clashed the glass, out-rebounding Rockland 32-14 and 16-3 on the offensive glass.
The Express then opened the second half on a 16-6 run, taking their first double-digit lead of the game. In total, Monroe outscored Rockland 40-14 from the 9:27 mark of the first half, till the 14:01 mark of the second half.
Rockland cut the deficit down to 10, twice during the second half, but the Express never let their lead drop to single digits, and pulled away late with a 6-0 run to take a 68-55 victory.
Florimon tallied a career-high 19 points, while
Gian Batista recorded his seventh double-double of the season, with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Jessy Jimenez and
Taffari Jarvis also tallied 11 points apiece for the Express, with Jarvis also adding eight rebounds and six assists.
The Express outrebounded Rockland, 57-31, including 22-8 on the offensive glass, while shooting 39.4 percent from the floor in the second half, and 34.2 percent for the game.
The Express next head to Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. to take on No. 2 Sullivan County Community College at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
