Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Earns First Conference Win over Bronx, 77-49

BRONX, N.Y., November 6, 2018 – Powered by double-doubles by Julie Trowers and Maryam Camara, Monroe Express women's basketball defeated Region XV-foe Bronx Community College, 77-49, on Tuesday at Alumni Gymnasium, to move to 1-2 (1-0) on the season.
 
Trowers gave the Express an early lead with her first-quarter layup, and after a back-and-forth first quarter, Monroe led by four, 17-13.
 
Bronx scored two of three first buckets in the second quarter to take a 20-19 lead, but the Express stormed back, retaking the lead just a few seconds later on Brianna Williams' jumper, and eventually extending their lead to double-digits on another layup by Trowers.
 
Monroe ended the second quarter on a 19-7, taking a 38-27 lead into the half. And the Express started the third quarter hot, extending their lead to 22 with an 11-0 run to open up the third, keyed by six points from Arianna Johnson.
 
The Express led by as much as 26 before taking a 21-point lead into the fourth, where they pulled away with a 28-point, 77-49 victory.
 
Trowers led the Express with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Camara added 10 points and 13 boards, falling an assist shy of a triple-double with nine assists. Arianna Johnson joined Camara and Trowers in double-figures with 12 points, adding nine rebounds and two assists.
 
The Express shot 40.5 percent from the floor and scored 50 of their 77 points in the paint, while holding the Broncos to 22.5 percent shooting.
 
The Express return to action on Thursday, Nov. 8 when they travel to Middletown, N.Y. to take on Orange County Community College at 5 p.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
