ROCHESTER, N.Y., November 11, 2018 – Monroe Express women's basketball fell to Sullivan County Community College in the consolation match of the Murph Shapiro Tournament on Sunday, 71-64, wrapping up a two-game stretch in Rochester, N.Y.
Sullivan County jumped out to an early lead, opening the game on a 7-0 run and headed into the first quarter break with a 23-11 lead. But the Express fought back, cutting the deficit to single digits, 38-29, before halftime, outscoring the Generals, 15-11 in the second quarter.
And though Sullivan quickly brought their lead back out to double-digits just under two minutes into the second half, Monroe again worked their way back, ending the third quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the Generals' lead to three, 53-50.
However, after some back-and-forth play to start the fourth quarter, Sullivan opened up an 11-point lead and pulled ahead, holding off the Express for a 71-64 victory.
Julie Trowers led the Express with 29 points and seven rebounds, tallying 16 of her 29 points in the second half.
Ariana Jones added nine points and three rebounds, while
Maryam Camara led Monroe defensively with two blocks and two steals.
The Express now head home for the first time this season, taking on Suffolk County Community College in their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
