NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 13, 2018 – Monroe Express women's basketball fell in their home opener to Suffolk County Community College, 65-40, on Tuesday at the Monroe Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Express fall to 1-6 (1-1 Region XV) on the season.
With the Express opening the first quarter ice cold from the floor, Suffolk County jumped out an early lead, and led, 16-2, at the end of the first quarter. And though the Express began to heat up in the second quarter, they still trailed, 25-9, at the half.
After the Sharks extended their lead with the first two buckets of the third quarter, the Express went on a run, cutting the deficit to 11, 33-22, with 3:46 to play in the quarter. But the Sharks responded to extend their lead back out to 15, heading into the fourth.
Monroe scored the first points of the six points of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to single digits for the first time since the first quarter. But again the Sharks responded, extending their lead back out to double-digits with a 12-2 run and pulling away over the final five minutes of the fourth to pick up a 65-40 victory.
Ariana Jones led the Express with 10 points, while
Julie Trowers fell a point shy of her second career double-double, tallying nine points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
The Express will look to bounce back on Thursday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Bayside, N.Y. to take on Queensborough Community College at 5:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
