ROCHESTER, N.Y., November 10, 2018 – Monroe Express women's basketball fell to Union County College, 96-32, in the opening round of the Murph Shapiro Tournament on Saturday. With the loss, the Express drop to 1-4 (1-0 Region XV) on the season.
The Owls took the lead early against the Express, jumping out to a 36-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Monroe battled back, but Union County went into halftime with a 58-19 lead.
In the second half, the Owls pulled away, taking home a 96-32 victory to advance to play Monroe Community College on Sunday.
Julie Trowers led the Express with 13 points, while
Maryam Camara recorded her second career double-double with a season-high 12 points and 17 rebounds. Camara also added two assists and four blocks, leading the Express in both categories.
The Express wrap up the Murph Shapiro Tournament on Sunday in Rochester, N.Y. when they take on Sullivan County Community College at 10:00 a.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
