BAYSIDE, N.Y., January 9, 2018 – Behind five players in double figures, and a program-record 91 points, the Monroe Express men's basketball team defeated Queensborough Community College, 91-70, at the RFK Gym Building.
Monroe took a 14-point, 42-28 lead into the halftime break and pulled away with a 49-point second half, outscoring the Tigers 49-42 to take home a 91-70 victory.
Gian Batista led the Express with 23 points, while
Ghetty Allui also joined Batista with 20-plus points, scoring 22. Batista also few a rebound shy of his fourth-career double-double with nine boards, including seven on the defensive glass.
Steven Hernandez,
Louis Florimon and
Taffari Jarvis joined Batista and Allui in double figures, scoring 11, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Express shot 36.6 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc en route to their second-straight win, moving to 5-10 on the season.
The Express wrap up their three-game road stretch on Thursday, Jan. 11 against Suffolk County Community College in Selden, N.Y., looking to avenge an early-season loss against the Sharks.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
