Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Falls Just Short in Close Contest with BMCC

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 23, 2018 – Down by four at the end of the third, the Monroe Express women's basketball team stormed back in the fourth quarter but fell short, falling to Borough of Manhattan Community College, 68-64 on Tuesday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.

Behind red-hot shooting from Tatyana Forde, the Express opened the game on a 10-3 run and held a one-point lead at the end of the quarter.

BMCC jumped ahead in the second quarter, but the Express ended the quarter on a 5-0 run, with all five points coming from Briyanna Graham, to take a 34-33 lead into halftime.

The Panthers came out after halftime and outscored the Express, opened the second half on a 13-5 run, and led by seven with 1:29 to play in the third. But Tatyana Forde cut the deficit to just four with her three-pointer at the buzzer and Monroe trailed by just four heading to the fourth.

Both teams traded buckets to open the fourth quarter, before Frances Morales gave the Express the lead on a three with 8:11 to play.

Neither the Express nor the Panthers led by more than four the rest of the way; and after Graham missed a three-pointer that would have given Monroe a one-point lead with 23 seconds to play Nikola Zilakova iced the win for BMCC with two free throws, giving the Panthers a 68-64 victory.

With the loss, the Express drop to 6-8 on the season.

Forde led the way for the Express with 22 points, while Jatekqua Ball added 12 points and seven rebounds. Graham tallied 10 assists, but fell a rebound and three points shy of a triple-double.

Both the Express and Panthers shot 35.9 percent from the floor, but the Express made five more threes and the Panthers made nine more free throws.

The Express are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 25 when they square off with No. 1-ranked Hostos Community College at 6 p.m. in The Bronx, looking to avenge their early-season loss to the Caimans.
