Florimon’s Go-Ahead Three Leads Monroe Express Men’s Basketball to 82-78 Victory over BMCC

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 23, 2018 – With ice water in his veins, Louis Florimon knocked down the go-ahead three-pointer with 35 seconds to play, and the Monroe Express men's basketball team held out to defeat the Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers, 82-78 on Tuesday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.

After five ties and four lead changes in the first 14 minutes, the Express got on a bit of a run, taking a 36-27 lead with just over three minutes to play in the first half. BMCC answered Monroe's 15-5 run with a 6-0 run of their own, before the Express headed into the half on a 7-0 run to take an 11-point, 43-32 lead.

Slowly though, the Panthers whittled the Express lead down to single digits and eventually just a point, tailing 47-46 with just under 14 minutes to play. The Express brought the lead back out to as large as eight with 7:53 to play, courtesy of a 5-0 run, but again the Panthers answered.

Starting at the 5:51 mark, BMCC went on a 5-0 to cut the Express lead and take a lead on their own, 69-67 with just under five minutes to play.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Gian Batista though, gave the Express the lead back, and after both teams traded free throws, BMCC and Monroe headed into the final minute tied at 75.

Florimon knocked down his go-ahead trey with 35 seconds to play, and Taffari Jarvis and Batista knocked down their free throws to seal the 82-78 victory for the Express. With the win, the Express move to 8-11 on the season.

Ghetty Allui led the Express with 21 points, while Florimon, Jarvis and Kashawn Middleton joined Allui scoring in double figures, with 14, 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Jarvis led the Express on the glass with nine rebounds, while also adding a team-high six assists.

The Express shot 43.3 percent from the floor, and 47.4 percent from beyond the arc, while holding the Panthers to just 34.8 percent shooting, and 33.3 percent from the three-point line.

In a game with eight ties and 13 lead changes, the Express took their final lead with 35 seconds to play and held on to win their third-straight.

The Express are back in action looking for their fourth-straight win on Thursday, Jan. 25 when they square off with Hostos Community College at 8 p.m. in The Bronx.
