Monroe Express Men’s Basketball Rolls Against Bronx, 92-69

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 16, 2018 – Five players scoring in double figures, including Gian Batista's game-high 26 and Kashawn Middleton's double-double, helped power the Monroe Express men's basketball team to a 92-69 victory over Bronx Community College on Tuesday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.

The Express traded buckets with the Broncos to open the first half in New Rochelle, N.Y., before back-to-back three-pointers from Batista gave the Express the lead.

Monroe never trailed the rest of the way, as they built their lead to as large as 12 in the first half behind a 12-2 run over three minutes midway through the first half.

The Express, led by Batista's 20 first-half points, led by eight, 44-36 at the break, but quickly pulled away in the second half, taking a 15-point, 55-40 lead with 13:52 to play.

Taffari Jarvis' free throw, capping off an 11-0 run, gave the Express its largest lead of the game at 26, 77-56, with 7:38 to play, and the Express would coast the rest of the way, ending the game on a 6-0 run to take home a 92-69 victory, and move to 6-11 on the season.

Batista led all scorers with 26, adding four assists and two steals. Jessy Jimenez tallied a career-high 18 points, adding five rebounds, four assists and six steals, while Kashawn Middleton put together his first career double-double, scoring 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Taffari Jarvis also scored in double figures for the fifth-consecutive game, tallying 11 points and five assists in 23 minutes, while Steven Hernandez scored double digits for the third-straight game with 10.

The Express shot 45.5 percent from the floor and 43.8 percent from three, while setting a new program-record for points scored, breaking the record of 91 they set just a few weeks ago.

Defensively, the Express held the Broncos to just 25.0 percent shooting from beyond the arc, and forced 30 turnovers resulting in 32 points for Monroe.

The Express are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to wrap up their season series with Kingsborough Community College.
