BRONX, N.Y., November 7, 2017 – Behind fifteen three-pointers, the Monroe Express women's basketball team opened their inaugural 2017-18 season with a 73-52 win over Bronx Community College on Tuesday.
After Bronx Community College jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, the Express roared back with an 8-0 run to take the lead and never looked back. With the help of five first quarter threes, the Express led the Broncos, 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The two teams traded buckets in the second quarter, and Monroe took a 27-21 lead over BCC into halftime.
In the third, the Broncos went on a run to cut Monroe's lead to just four, but the Express held strong, and took a 53-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
And in the fourth the Express used a 13-3 run of their own to pull away, taking a 66-44 with just over five minutes to play, eventually taking home a 73-52 victory.
Briyanna Graham led the way for the Express with 27 points on 9-of-19 shooting, including 6-for-9 from beyond the arc, while
Fatomata Trawalleh added 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting.
Graham and Trawalleh, along with
Tatyana Forde, tallied double-digit scoring efforts for the Express, while Graham and Forde also led the team in rebounds with seven a piece.
The Express are back in action on Thursday, Nov. 9 when they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY to take on Dutchess Community College at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
