TROY, N.Y., November 28, 2017 – The Monroe Express women's basketball team dropped an overtime thriller to Hudson Valley Community College, 94-90, on Tuesday, falling to 3-2 on the season.
Monroe started a bit slow out of the gate against Hudson Valley, and the Vikings held a 23-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Express cut the deficit in the second quarter, and heading into halftime trailing by just seven.
The Express came out strong in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to as low as four, but a late charge from the Vikings gave Hudson Valley an eight-point lead, 66-58, at the end of the third.
But Monroe stormed back in the fourth quarter, tying things up and taking a 79-78 lead on an and-one by
Fatomata Trawalleh. Monroe led by as many as three, but the Vikings tied things up with a late three, and though the Express got the last shot, Monroe and Hudson Valley headed to overtime, tied at 86.
And while the Express got on the board first in overtime, Hudson Valley made a late run to take the lead for good and pull out a 94-90 (OT) victory.
Bryianna Graham led the way for the Express with 26 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Frances Morales added a season-high 24 points, as well as six rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block, while
Muray Nelson tallied her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 19 rebounds.
The Express will look to get back on track with a win when they head to Manhattan to take on the Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
