NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 16, 2017 – The Monroe Express women's basketball team continued their undefeated start to the season, topping Queensborough Community College 63-42 on Thursday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
After the Express and Tigers traded buckets early on in the first quarter, Monroe ended the first quarter leading 19-11, pulling away behind six points from
Fatomata Trawalleh.
The Express ended the first quarter on a 2-0 run and continued it into the second quarter, holding the Tigers scoreless from the 6:36 mark of the second quarter till there were just 39 seconds left in the quarter.
Monroe finished the first half and ended the second half on an extended 16-5 run to take a 32-15 lead into halftime.
But the Express wouldn't stop there, as the Express outscored Queensborough 21-11 in the third quarter to extend their lead out to 27, 53-26, at the end of the third quarter.
And though the Tigers outscored the Express 16-10 in the fourth quarter, Monroe pulled away with a 63-42 victory.
Briyanna Graham led the way for the Express with 17 points and five assists, while Trawalleh, and
Muray Nelson added 12 points apiece.
The Express led the whole way, holding Queensborough to just 21.1 percent shooting, and 0-for-7 from beyond the arc. Monroe also outrebounded the Tigers, 60-47.
Monroe will look to remain undefeated when they take on Hostos Community College on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
