Culwell began his volleyball career at Clarkstown North High School in 2014, playing three years as a starter and two years as a captain as outside hitter and setter. After his high school stint, he went on to play at Ramapo College for the 2017 season as a setter.Â
After this time, he began his coaching career in the boys program at Clarkstown South in 2018 and at the club level at Downstate VBC, coaching within the boys and girls programs at multiple age levels. He still remains with Downstate today, coaching in the boys program.Â
Culwell then became a head coach at the varsity level in 2019 at Albertus Magnus High School in Bardonia, NY in the girls program.Â
