NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team remained perfect in Region 15 play on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Kingsborough Community College by a score of 2-0 at Flowers Park. With the victory, the Express improve to 7-2-1 overall and 7-0-0 in Region 15 play.
Mamadou Bangoura opened the scoring just 4:55 into the contest, finding the back of the net off a deflection inside the box shortly after a corner kick to give Monroe an early 1-0 advantage.
The Express carried the lead into halftime before adding an insurance goal in the 76th minute. Cheikh Toure finished off a cross from the left by Kadiff Wolfe, extending Monroe's advantage to 2-0.
The Blue and Gold's defense held Kingsborough (9-2-1, 6-2-1 Region 15) scoreless despite the Wave recording 15 shots, including five on goal. The Express finished with 18 shots and six shots on goal while earning six corner kicks.
Monroe goalkeeper Raymond Romero made five saves to preserve the shutout, while Kingsborough goalkeeper Mario Brown recorded four saves.
"Tough game today. I don't think we played to our full potential," Express Head Coach Jose Hernandez said. "We got caught up in their long-ball game and struggled to keep possession, which affected our style of play. But at the end of the day, I'm always happy to get three points at home and finish with a clean sheet. We're still undefeated (in the region) at 7-0-0, but there's always room to improve. We keep working and moving forward!"
The Express return to action Thursday, October 1, against Westchester Community College. The Region 15 match will be held at Barrett Field, in Valhalla, N.Y., beginning at 4 p.m.
