NEW YORK – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team continued its perfect start to Region 15 play on Tuesday afternoon, earning an 8-0 shutout victory over LaGuardia Community College at Randall's Island Field #71. The Express extend their winning streak to five matches. The Blue and Gold improves to 5-2-1 overall and 5-0-0 in Region 15 play.
"Another win on the road and another clean sheet, which is always what we want," Express Head Coach Jose Hernandez said. "Very happy with the team's performance and the way we continue to compete. Now we keep working and get ready for the next one."
The Express wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Mamadou Top opened the scoring in the fifth minute by tipping in a corner kick from Robert Arias.
Oumar Barry doubled the advantage just three minutes later, stealing the ball before beating the goalkeeper one-on-one. Barry struck again in the 10th minute, scoring off an assist from Arias to give Monroe a 3-0 lead. Barry now has nine goals and 23 points this season.
Arias added a goal of his own, the first of his collegiate career, in the 19th minute as he found the back of the net off a rebound during a scramble inside the box.
Abdoulaye Sarr capped off the first-half scoring in the 34th minute, heading into halftime with the Express holding a 5-0 advantage. Cheikh Toure earned the assist on the play.
Monroe continued its offensive pressure after the break, with Jeffrey Juca scoring in the 65th minute after stealing the ball and beating the LaGuardia goalkeeper.
Just over a minute later, Joshua Suazo extended the lead to 7-0, scoring off a corner kick from Iker Cuero Asprilla.
Top capped off the scoring in the 79th minute, recording his second goal of the afternoon after receiving a cross from Kadiff Wolfe.
Monroe finished the contest with 24 shots, including 13 on goal, while earning seven corner kicks. The Express' defense limited LaGuardia to seven total shots and four shots on target.
The shutout marked another strong defensive performance for the Blue and Gold, with Nalian Gonsalves making two saves in the opening half and then Nelson Acosta stopping two shots in goal during the second stanza. Gonsalves earned the win in his collegiate debut.
For the Red Hawks (1-5-2, 1-5-2 Region 15), Youssouf Sow made five saves during the contest.
Monroe returns to action against Rockland Community College, on Thursday September 24th. The Region 15 match will be held at Flowers Park Soccer Field, beginning at 3 p.m.
