SUFFERN, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team earned two Region 15 victories on Saturday afternoon at the campus of Rockland Community College. The Express opened the productive afternoon with a straight-set victory over the host-Hawks and then knocked off the defending regional champion Westchester Community College by a score of 3-0.
The Express advance to 4-1 overall and are undefeated in regional play at 3-0.
"Two matches, two road wins," Express Head Coach
Odaly Aponte-Orta said following the pair of regional wins on Saturday. "One of them was against the team that took the championship from us last season. This wasn't just a win; it was a statement. We remembered. We worked. We responded."
In the victory over Rockland (0-3, 0-3 Region 15), set scores were 25-6, 25-5, and 25-10.
As a team, Monroe scored 31 service aces during the contest.
Ayleenee Salbitani Lopez scored a match-high 12 aces, while slamming seven kills (.385 hitting percentage). She added four digs.
Robyn Eddy also had a big match against the Hawks as she generated seven kills, a .667 hitting percentage, and a match-best four blocks.
Yamelyn Bonilla registered five putdowns and six service victories.
Brycelynn Paul also nailed six aces, while compiling two defensive bumps.
Darilenia Paulino tallied a match-best 11 assists to go along with a pair of digs.
Nicole Garrett picked up four service aces.
Jessica Desruisseaux provided four assists, two aces, and a dig.
Keilyn Gamboa had a kill, an ace, and two digs.
Jopnerys Espinal Chalas scored a kill.
In the win over the Westchester (1-3, 1-3 Region 15), set scores were 25-10, 25-18, and 25-11.
Bonilla had a productive match with nine kills, four aces, and six digs. Eddy added seven kills and two solo blocks. Salbitani Lopez compiled three successful attacks, just as many aces, and six digs. Paulino tallied four kills, nine helpers, two aces, and a duo of defensive bumps.
Also helping Monroe was Paul who provided seven digs, four victories on the serve, and two assists. Desruisseaux added six assists and four digs. Espinal Chalas chipped in with three defensive bumps and a pair of helpers. Garrett compiled two kills and six aces. Gamboa earned two service victories.
Monroe – Bronx will continue Region 15 play on Thursday at LaGuardia Community College. First serve in Long Island City, N.Y. is set for 7 p.m.
