Express Baseball Concludes Regular Season With Loss to No. 8 Brookdale

LINCROFT, N.J. – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team closed out the regular season with a loss to nationally ranked No. 8 Brookdale Community College, 13-3, at MacLaughlin Field on Sunday afternoon. 

The Express will now head to the Region 15 Playoffs. The double-elimination tournament will begin on Thursday against #4-seed Bronx Community College, at Middle Country Park in Selden, N.Y., beginning at 3 p.m. Monroe will be the top seed in the regional postseason. 

In the regular-season finale against Brookdale (39-10-1), the Express (23-13) gave up three runs in the opening inning and then another one in the second.

Monroe bounced back and scored three runs in the top of the third, thanks to an RBI double by Adrian Nunez and a two-run triple courtesy of David Echavarria, to slice the Jersey Blues' lead to 4-3. 

Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, Brookdale scored four runs in the home half of the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to secure the victory.

For the Express, Juan Carlos Salcedo singled and scored. Robert Herrera and Nunez each crossed home plate. Pablo Aquino walked and stole a base. Nunez, Christopher Rivas, and Juan Diaz each drew a walk. 

On the mound for the Express, Jonathan Vasquez started the game and took the loss.

For Brookdale, Matty Koening went three innings, struck out five batters, gave up three hits, just as many runs, and a pair of walks to earn the win.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
