Derek Lebron's Big Day Helps Express Baseball Earn Two Region 15 Wins Over Queensborough

Derek Lebron Went 6-for-6 With Two Homers During Express Baseball's Sweep of Queensborough.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BELLEROSE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team secured two more Region 15 victories on Saturday afternoon, defeating Queensborough Community College by scores of 20-2 and 10-0 at Padavan-Preller Field.

The Express earn the three-game regular-season sweep over the Tigers and advance their regional record to an unblemished 6-0 mark (11-7 overall). Monroe extends its overall winning streak to seven games.

In Game 1, Derek Lebron smashed two home runs and went a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBIs and scored four times. 

In the opening inning of the first game, Elijah Andino drilled a two-run homer to put the Express up 2-0. Later in the frame, David Echavarria slapped an RBI single to extend Monroe's lead to three. After Monroe built a five-run advantage, Lebron capped the scoring in the opening inning with a two-run round-tripper to put the Blue and Gold up 7-0 before the Tigers even had a chance to bat.

Queensborough (0-11, 0-9 Region 15) got one run back in the bottom frame.

After a scoreless second by both teams, the Express built its lead in the top of the third as Anthony Sanchez led it off with a solo home run to center which put Monroe up 8-1. Lebron added a run-scoring single and then Pablo Aquino drove in a pair with a base hit to pad the Express' hold to 11-1. Monroe ended up taking a 12-1 surplus to the bottom of the third. 

Frangel Rodriguez, who started the game for Monroe, continued to perform strong as he retired the Tigers' lineup in order in the third. 

In the top of the fourth, Abraham Joaquin Taveras produced an RBI single, while Lebron stepped up to the plate and belted his second two-run round-tripper of the contest to inflate Monroe's cushion to 15-1. Later in the inning, Juan Carlos Salcedo delivered a run-scoring single to give the Express a 16-1 advantage. 

Monroe scored four more runs in the top of the fifth. The Tigers produced their second run in the bottom frame but it was not enough as the Express earned the Game 1 victory by a score of 20-2.

Rodriguez picked up his fourth-straight complete-game victory as he struck out four batters, gave up just three hits, surrendered two runs, and walked a trio of batters in five innings pitched.

At the plate for Monroe, Echavarria went 3-for-4 and scored three times. Andino and Taveras each collected two hits for the Express with the latter scoring four runs. Adrian Nunez worked four walks and had two RBIs. Robert Herrera scored three times and added two walks.  As a team, the Express produced 14 hits and drew nine walks in Game 1. 

For Queensborough, Domenic Ruggerio started the game and took the loss. 

In Game 2, Monroe opened the scoring in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single by Jeisser Morales. In the top of the third, the Express plated five more runs to build up to a 6-0 benefit. Joshua Osorio drilled a two-run homer during the frame. Earlier in the inning, Herrera delivered with an RBI single. 

The Express tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth, keyed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Juan Diaz and a run-scoring triple courtesy of Michael Mateo. The Express took a 10-0 surplus into the bottom of the fourth.

That concluded the scoring and the Express went on to win Game 2, sweeping the doubleheader and the regular-season series over Queensborough.

On the mound, Yevian Delgado was lights out for Monroe. He struck out six batters, only gave up two hits, and walked zero batters in five innings pitched to earn the complete-game shutout victory. 

Monroe – Bronx's lineup tallied 13 hits during the second game. Aquino and Osorio each produced three hits for the Blue and Gold. Mateo, Morales, and Osorio each drove in two runs. Lebron went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. He went 6-for-6 during the doubleheader. Osorio and Herrera each scored twice. Morales went 2-for-3. Samuel Hernandez and Herrera each reached base with a single. Sanchez walked and stole a base.

"Great job by our offense and an even better job by our pitching staff," Express Head Coach Bryan Diaz said. "Just taking it one game at a time and staying focused on getting better every inning."

For Queensborough, Justin Douglas started the game and took the loss.

Monroe – Bronx will return to Padavan-Preller Field on Tuesday afternoon for more Region 15 action. This time, the Express will battle Borough of Manhattan Community College. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
