Express Softball Drops Both Games to No. 8 Suffolk County; Clinches No. 3 Seed in Region 15 Playoffs

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx softball team dropped both Region 15 games to nationally ranked No. 8 Suffolk County Community College, by scores of 12-0 and 12-4, at Brentwood Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Express (6-28, 0-8 Region 15) clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Region 15 Postseason.  The Sharks (15-9, 7-1 Region 15) will be the No. 1 seed.

In Game 1, Suffolk County scored two runs in each of the first three innings, and then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth, en route to the opening-game victory. 

For Monroe, Ebony Hernandez hit a double during the contest. Rossel Hercules, Nevaeh Feliciano, and Taina Nieves each hit a single. Nieves worked a walk. In the circle, Kimberly Coste pitched a complete game but was handed the loss.

In Game 2, Monroe produced 10 hits. The Express struck first and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Sharks responded with five in the bottom frame to take the lead. Monroe answered with a pair of runs in the second and one in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-4. However, Suffolk County scored seven runs across the final three innings to earn the sweep.

For Monroe, Kimora Thompson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Hernandez produced two hits, including an RBI double, and crossed home plate. Melissa Martinez produced an RBI double. Nieves singled and walked. Jayda Delgado produced an RBI single. Hercules singled, walked, and stole two bases. Feliciano earned a base on balls. Tiara Desanto singled, stole a base, and came around to score. In the circle, Martinez struck out four batters but took the loss.

Monroe will battle #2-seed Dutchess Community College in the first round of the Region 15 Postseason. The first two games of the Best-Of-Three Series will begin on Tuesday, at Dutchess Softball Field, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
