Ebony Hernandez's Home Run Not Enough for Express Softball in Doubleheader Against NJCAA Division II Allegany College of Maryland

CUMBERLAND, Md. – The Monroe University – Bronx softball team dropped two games to NJCAA Division II Allegany College of Maryland, 14-6 and 7-4, at ACM Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon.

In the opening game, the Trojans (7-21-1) scored six runs across the first two innings to take a 6-0 lead and never looked back. Monroe (6-26) put up a five-spot in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 9-6, but Allegany – Maryland answered with five runs of its own in the bottom frame to earn the mercy-rule win.

For the Express, Kimora Thompson and Tiara Desanto each drove in two runs. Thompson produced a double, walked, stole a base, and scored a run. Desanto worked two walks and singled. Nevaeh Feliciano went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Ebony Hernandez earned two walks and scored. Karla Recio Rodriguez singled, walked, and crossed home plate. Michelle Cortes Molina tallied a base hit and then came around to score. Heather Torres scored a run. Taina Nieves produced multiple singles, while Rossel Hercules reached first with a hit.

In the circle for Monroe, Darlene Pena Puente started the game and took the loss.

In Game 2, the Express scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Trojans countered with a run of their own in the bottom frame to tie it up.

Allegany – Maryland continued its momentum with one run in the second and two in the third to go up 4-1. The Express chipped way with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to pull to within 4-3. However, the Trojans' bats produced a three-run fifth to take a commanding 7-3 hold. Monroe got one run back in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough as Allegany – Maryland hung on to win Game 2 and earn the sweep.

For the Express, Desanto went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and a pair of runs scored. Hernandez hit a solo home run for her fourth round-tripper of the year. Hercules went 2-for-3, including a double, and drove in a run. Puente and Nieves each walked with the latter coming around to score. Rodriguez had a base hit and tallied two RBIs. Molina singled.

Kimberly Coste pitched a complete game for Monroe but took the loss. She struck out three batters in six innings pitched. Coste gave up seven runs (three earned), surrendered six hits, and allowed seven walks.
