Robert Herrera's Historic Day Leads Express Baseball to Pair of Region 15 Victories Over Dutchess

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MILLBROOK, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team continued its strong play on Saturday afternoon by winning two Region 15 games against Dutchess Community College, by scores of 16-3 and 17-7, at Millbrook Field.

History was made as Express sophomore infielder Robert Herrera eclipsed 100 career hits. He had 99 coming into the twin bill and added three hits during the afternoon to put him at 102 for his career.

Herrera produced his 100th career hit in grand fashion in the top of the third inning of Game 1. With the bases loaded, Herrera took the first pitch he saw and drilled the ball over the fence in center field for a grand slam. That milestone blast gave Monroe a 10-1 advantage.

In Game 2, Herrera produced an RBI single in the top of the first and then hit a three-run homer to center in the top of the third for his second round-tripper of the afternoon and his 102nd career hit.

In the two games combined, Herrera went 3-for-5 with eight RBIs and five runs scored. In Game 1, he walked three times and stole a base.

"Honestly, I am not shocked about (Robert's) 100th hit here at Monroe," Express Head Coach Bryan Diaz said. "He is a young man that works hard both on and off the field and has tremendous character. The guys revolve around him not only as a person but as the captain."

The two wins by the Express extend their winning streak to 16 games. They are a perfect 12-0 in the region (20-7 overall).

In Game 1, the Express and Falcons (0-13, 0-12 Region 15) were tied at one heading to the top of the second. Pablo Aquino stepped up to the plate and drove in two runs with a single to give the Express a 3-1 advantage. He ended up scoring from third on a passed ball to pad Monroe's surplus to three runs.

The Express' bats broke out in the top of the third, scoring eight runs. Herrera's monumental grand slam was the highlight of Monroe's productive frame. Earlier in the inning, Elijah Andino drilled an RBI double and Abraham Joaquin Taveras slapped a run-scoring single. Anthony Sanchez put a cap on the inning with a two-run homer to center, his ninth round-tripper of the season, to make it 12-1 in favor of the Blue and Gold.

In the top of the fifth, David Echavarria continued Monroe's strong hitting with a three-run homer and then Taveras produced an RBI double to make it 16-1 in favor of Monroe. The Falcons added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough as Monroe earned the regional win to open the twin bill.

As a team, Monroe produced 11 hits, eight walks, and three stolen bases during the first end of the doubleheader.

Andino went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Taveras collected three hits and crossed home plate two times. Echavarria went 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice. Derek Lebron walked twice and scored. Aquino crossed home plate two times, walked, and stole a base.

On the mound for Monroe, Frangel Rodriguez earned his sixth win of the season (6-1) as he struck out seven batters, surrendered seven hits, gave up three runs, and walked two batters in five innings pitched. He now has four complete games this year.

In Game 2, Monroe's bats caught fire in the top of the first. Herrera started it with an RBI single to put Monroe on the board. Then, Joshua Osorio and Andino drilled RBI doubles to pad the Blue and Gold's advantage to three runs. Angel Tineo concluded the first-inning scoring with a two-run homer to right which put Monroe up 5-0 before Dutchess even got a chance to bat. Tineo now has four home runs this season.

The Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the second to pull to within two. However, the Express answered with a 10-run third inning. Herrera's three-run homer was a key to the run production. Yaxiel Morales De Jesús drew a walk with the bases loaded to earn an RBI. Jeisser Morales and Aquino drilled two-run doubles. Juan Diaz provided an RBI single. Jeisser Morales scored on an error to make it 15-3 in favor of Monroe.

In the top of the fourth, Juan Diaz drove in two runs with a single to inflate Monroe's cushion to 17-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Andrew Relyea hit a grand slam with one out to inch Dutchess closer. It was not enough as Colin Delaney Jr. got the opposing batter to pop up to Osorio at first to clinch Monroe's 12th Region 15 victory of the year, 17-7.

Yevian Delgado picked up his fourth win of the season (4-2) on the mound for Monroe as he struck out three batters in four innings pitched. He gave up three runs, eight hits, and two walks during the contest.

At the plate for the Express, Diaz went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Yaxiel Morales De Jesús went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Jeisser Morales scored twice, worked a walk, and went 2-for-2. Osorio and Tineo each scored three times, with the latter drawing two walks. Aquino and Herrera each crossed home plate two times. Samuel Hernandez doubled and scored a run.

Monroe – Bronx will battle the defending Region 15 champion Suffolk County Community College in a regional showdown, at Roberto Clemente State Park, on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
