Express Softball Drops Both Region 15 Games to Dutchess

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx softball team dropped both games of its Region 15 doubleheader to Dutchess Community College, by scores of 15-2 and 12-2, at Flowers Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (9-6, 5-3 Region 15) have taken all four regular season games from the Express (6-24, 0-6 Region 15) this season.

Monroe trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the first of Game 1. However, Tiara Desanto and Karla Recio Rodriguez got the Express on track by drilling inside-the-park home runs to tie it up at two. Desanto now has four home runs this year, while Rodriguez launched the first round-tripper of her collegiate career.

Dutchess answered back in the top of the second with three runs. After adding a run in the fourth, the Falcons broke the game open with nine runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach for the Express.

For Monroe, Desanto went 2-for-3 and stole a base. Kimora Thompson singled, while Jayda Delgado earned a base on balls. In the circle, Kimberly Coste started the game and took the loss. Melissa Martinez pitched in relief and only gave up one hit and did not walk a batter in 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

For Dutchess, Kayla Baez had a strong all-around game. At the plate, she went 3-for-3 with a home run, scored three times, and drew a walk. In the circle, she earned the complete-game victory by striking out nine batters, giving up just four hits, surrendering two runs, and allowing a walk in five innings pitched. Gianna Petrillo went 3-for-4, including two doubles, while scoring four times.

In Game 2, the Falcons scored five runs in the opening inning and never looked back.

The Express got their runs thanks to an RBI single by Nevaeh Feliciano in the bottom of the third and a run-scoring single off the bat of Rossel Hercules in the home half of the fourth. Those run-producing hits were not enough as Dutchess earned the sweep.

Feliciano went 2-for-3 during the second game for Monroe, while Thompson also produced two hits in three at-bats. Desanto singled and scored a run, while Ebony Hernandez crossed home plate. Martinez reached base with a single. On the pitching side, Martinez started the game and was handed the loss.

For the Falcons, Baez hit a three-run homer (her second home run of the twin bill) and scored twice. She picked up her second complete-game victory of the afternoon by fanning six hitters and allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned), and a walk. Angelina Nesheiwat went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and just as many runs. Amelia Molella had two hits, including a triple, and scored three times. She also drove in a run.

Monroe – Bronx will host the Westchester Community College Club team in a doubleheader at Flowers Park on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon. It will be sophomore day and Monroe University – Bronx will honor second-year players Suki "Ren" Reyes, Michelle Cortes Molina, Darlene Pena Puente, and Martinez with a ceremony prior to the start of the opening game.
