BRONX – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team continued its dominant run in Region 15 play on Saturday afternoon, securing a doubleheader sweep over Borough of Manhattan Community College by scores of 36-1 and 10-0 at Roberto Clemente State Park.
The Express earn the three-game regular-season sweep over the Panthers and advance their regional record to a perfect 9-0 mark (15-7 overall). Monroe extends its overall winning streak to nine games.
"These two wins are a testament to our hard work and discipline on the offensive side and the hard work our staff does with the pitching staff, creating consistency," Express Head Coach
Bryan Diaz said.
In Game 1, the Express' offense exploded for 36 runs on 19 hits.
Joshua Osorio led the charge, going 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, four RBIs, and five runs scored.
The game was tight early, as BMCC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Monroe answered in the bottom half when
Robert Herrera stole third and scored on a throwing error to tie the game.
The floodgates opened in the bottom of the second as the Express plated 29 runs. Key moments from the inning included a three-run triple by
Pablo Aquino, a two-run double by
Angel Tineo, and a three-run home run by Osorio. Later in the same inning,
Michael Mateo tripled to right field to drive in two more runs, pushing the lead to 30-1.
Monroe added four runs in the third and two in the fourth to finalize the 36-1 victory. Tineo punctuated the scoring in the third with a two-run home run to left field.
Frangel Rodriguez earned his fifth win of the season, striking out six batters and allowing just two hits in four innings of work.
Arián Hierro tossed a hitless fifth inning to close out the contest.
In Game 2, Monroe's pitching took center stage as
Yevian Delgado delivered a masterful performance. Delgado struck out 11 batters, surrendered only two hits, and walked just one in a five-inning complete-game shutout.
The Express took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Juan Carlos Salcedo doubled to left field to score
Derek Lebron. Monroe broke the game open with six runs in the second inning. Salcedo tripled to right field to drive in a run, and
David Echavarria followed with an RBI single. Tineo then cleared the fence for the second time in the doubleheader, launching a two-run home run to center field to make it 7-0.
The scoring concluded in the fourth inning when a dropped fly ball allowed the final two runs to cross the plate. The Express finished the 10-0 victory with eight hits and 12 stolen bases.
For BMCC, Ronald Loja got the start in Game 1,while Evan Hernandez started Game 2, as both pitchers were charged with the losses.
Monroe – Bronx will continue its season on Monday, April 13, when they face Ulster County Community College at Cantine Field in Saugerties, N.Y. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
